You probably heard the media talking about the purple dots on Michael Phelps's body. Those are from an old Chinese therapy technique called cupping. Cupping consists of placing suction cups on the body to help with pain and muscle tightness. The suction pulls toxins and cellular waste out of the deep tissues and encourage blood flow, which brings fresh blood, lymphatic fluid, oxygen and nutrients. ![]() In my practice I use an alternative to Chinese cupping, called Soma cupping. Soma cups are made of silicone. Because soma cupping involves movements of the cups as oppose to static cup placements, bruising (purple dots) is generally less than with traditional glass cupping. Soma cupping lifts and separate tissues off of each other bringing more fluids and as a result the tissues get rehydrated and more pliable. Some of the advantages of using Soma cupping are that it can be use directly over the spine, can relieve trigger points, help relieving pain and is a great tool to deal with scars. ![]() "The speed at which the cupping released my adhesions and allowed my muscles to relax was immediately noticeable. Myriam's touch is so therapeutic compared to other therapists but the cupping allowed her to take her ability to another level!" - Brad Huff, 2016 Criterium National Champion Myriam Desrosiers, LMT - Therapeutic Massage
